Yasmani Grandal’s eighth-inning double was the only hit the Milwaukee Brewers could produce in a 3-0 loss at St. Louis Monday. Dakota Hudson and two relievers shut out the Brewers on that lone hit and five walks to push Milwaukee three games out of first place in the National League Central Division. Zach Davies took the loss despite giving up only three hits in five innings, good for a pair of runs. Gio Gonzalez starts the second game of the three-game series tonight against righty Michael Wacha. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM, and pregame coverage will start at 6:10 on 1240 AM WOMT.
Meanwhile, a rookie has taken his leadoff spot and he’s hitting about 60 points lower than last year, but Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain says he’s “great.” Cain has dealt with a series of injuries this season which have knocked his batting average down to .250 — a career-low. He struck out as a pinch-hitter in Monday’s 3-0 loss after being out of the starting lineup for the third game in a row. He says it was a team decision to keep him on the bench with an oblique problem. It isn’t clear when he might start again, but it could be tonight (Tuesday) if Cain has his way..
