It’s now legal to drive golf carts in the Two Rivers city limits. City Manager Greg Buckley says the City Council approved the measure earlier this month. Buckley explained that the DOT defines a golf cart as a “slow-moving vehicle, that cannot go more than 20 MPH. They have to be equipped with signals, and restraints.”
Last year, state law was changed to allow local cities and their villages, at their discretion, to allow or disallow golf carts on their streets. There is one major restriction, however, and that is that they must stay on roads that have a speed limit of 35 MPH or less. Buckley explained that means that cart drivers cannot travel on Memorial Drive along the lake.
Other rules that must be abided by include that the cart displays a placard that indicates that it is a slow-moving vehicle, they must stay as far to the right in the roadway as possible and pay an annual $25 fee to legally operate them. Two Rivers currently has 8 registered golf carts on file.
