The Haven in Manitowoc is once again gearing up to host their annual Cardboard City event. This is the third year of the event, where people can see what it’s like to live on the street. In the past, Cardboard City was held at The Haven, but this year, as Michael Ethridge clarified, it will be at a First Presbyterian Church located at 502 North 8th Street. “We thought we should just switch the area up a little bit”, he explained.
Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Jean Wakefield says that even though Cardboard City is only three years old, it is derived from another program Habitat used to run. Called Shanty Town.
The event will take place on the evening of October 12th into the following morning, and Jean said that if you plan to attend, you just need to bring cardboard, and tape or a tent depending on what you plan to sleep in. The cost for this fundraising event is different depending on what you bring. A group of four sleeping in a cardboard house of their design will cost $100, while a tent is $175, and if you are going to sleep in your car, it will be $250.
There will also be food, music, games, and a speaker to round out the evening’s activities. Proceeds will be split between The Haven, Hope House, and Habitat for Humanity.
