It was a warm day on Ron Rubick Municipal Field yesterday afternoon, as the Manitowoc Lincoln Ships football team continued their first week of practice. We were able to catch up with new head coach Greg Enz before practice and asked him how he plans to turn around a program that has struggled over the past couple of seasons. He explained to SeehaferNews.com that he has had “the pleasure to work with good people over the years…and over that time have seen certain things that are really productive….The other end of it is also providing something that is unique to what Lincoln Football needs.”
Sometimes, when a new coach comes into a program, the players do not immediately respond to him or her, but Coach Enz feels the transition has been relatively smooth. “The kids have really been responsive,” Enz said. “Are there areas we still need to see improvement on in terms of that offseason? Sure, but I think we took a very good initial step over the past couple of months.”
The Ships will be facing off against Bay Port in the first game of the season on August 22nd, which is only a few short weeks away. Bay Port Dominated Lincoln last year, winning 42-0 on Rubick Field. We asked Coach Enz how he is planning for the powerhouse program, and he said he isn’t worried about the opponent per se. “15 years ago you would worry about what team you were playing, but I think the lesson to learn is it’s not really more or less, who you’re playing, it’s about what you have to do in preparation for yourself.
Enz runs a high octane practice, with high energy, and the players always doing something. Whether they are running sprints, working on footwork, or running plays, the players are really getting into football shape and preparing for the first year under new leadership.
Below are several pics we were able to take at the Ships practice. We would like to thank Coach Enz and his entire coaching staff for allowing us to talk about the upcoming season, and to photograph practice.
