Manitowoc County is holding a free nitrate screening for private well owners during the Manitowoc County Fair. Nitrates are one of the most common contaminants in drinking water and are also a leading indicator of other possible contaminants. County officials say owners should have a nitrate screening done annually. To take advantage of the free screening, bring a water sample (approximately ½ cup) from your home in a clean bottle to the Manitowoc County booth in the Merchant’s Building during the County fair Wednesday, August 21 through August 24th 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. and Sunday, August 25th from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. The screening will be completed while you wait or you can leave a sample at the booth and pick up the results later. This screening is sponsored by Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation and the Manitowoc County Association for Home & Community Education.
