As many in agriculture can attest, we’ve had a very tough spring. But, Dave Wilfert, from Wilfert Farms at 7528 Manitou Drive, Two Rivers tells SeehaferNews.com, the strawberries are looking fantastic. However, he explained “It’s going to be a short-lived crop. It’s going to be very compact, but there’s gonna be lots of berries once it’s ready to go.”
In fact, Wilfert says it’s the nicest berries he’s seen in 10 -15-years. However, with warm, damp conditions they need to get them harvested soon. He estimated that they have between 10 and 14 days before the crop takes a dive in quality, but Wilfert says “if you can get here, and get them fast, that’s gonna be the secret to having some quality stuff in your freezer.”
As for the highly coveted sweet corn, Wilfert said the early corn they raise in Coloma under plastic should be ready in mid-July. He added that “The corn up here is looking ok, but it’s also behind…It’s been a really tough spring.” The local grower said the pea crop is the poorest he’s had in a number of years.
