Summer is here, even if it isn’t quite as warm as some may like it to be. The children are out of school and are enjoying their free time, but with all the rain we have been getting, and the potential for a heatwave on the horizon, some of the kids are going to spend more time online. Michelle Reinen, the Director of the Wisconsin Bureau of Consumer Protection warns that parents should keep an eye on what their children are doing online. “We want to be sure that kid’s parents and guardians are really taking note of making sure that kids are safe online,” Reinen told Seehafer News. “Where consumer protection comes in, is the malware the email phishing schemes, the unexpected in-app charges that a child can incur, and really identity theft.”
There are also a lot of different websites that the children should not be going to, but there are a few ways parents can help keep their children off those sites and apps. Reinen told us that “One place to start is really restricting access that the child has, and the parent/guardian has control over that by using the parental controls.”
The best way to ensure your children are being responsible online is to simply educate them about the dangers that are lurking on the web. If the child is aware of what could go wrong, they are more likely to approach online activity with a healthy amount of caution.
