The President of the Manitowoc County Lakes Association said there will be ‘boat checks’ this weekend on county ‘inland’ lakes. Tom Ward tells Seehafer News that Manitowoc & Sheboygan County are sharing a new Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator, Samantha Lammers.
“Our primary goal will be starting what is called a “landing blitz” this weekend. Between the volunteers and we have one person doing boat inspections, we’re there to help people understand why they have to clean their boats off, and why they have to drain their live wells so they don’t transport water.”
Ward explains the ‘real focus’ is preventing the transfer of contaminated water. “We had 3 lakes with zebra muscles and larvae are in that water. You just can’t move that water into another lake or we have that new spread of invasives.”
Tom Ward also says Manitowoc is one of the few counties that have put up a ‘cleaning station’ at most of their boat launches. He said there’s a bleach solution maintained by a neighbor and if you come from lakes with zebra mussels, you’re encouraged to spray your boat with bleach before and after you launch to disinfect against those organisms.
