Manitowoc County Board Chairman Jim Brey has responded to the recent veto of the resolution to get the State Attorney General’s opinion on the proposed half percent sales tax ordinance that the board is considering. Brey stated in a release that the Board will attempt to override the expected veto of the resolution by County Executive Bob Zigelbauer. Brey did also question Ziegelbauer’s motives saying “We all have to remember that this was not a vote on implementing a half percent sales tax here in Manitowoc County, it was a vote on whether the proposed ordinance is legal. I question what the County Executive is afraid of by getting this opinion.” The proposed ordinance would allocate 70 % of the money would be used for road repair and road development, while the other 30% would be distributed to the 30 municipalities within Manitowoc County. The legality in question is whether the County has to set some of the money aside for the school districts as well. To override the veto, there must be a minimum of 17 out of the 25 Supervisors to support the override.
