The topic of suicide and mental health has become very prominent in a lot of people’s minds recently, specifically after several high profile cases over the past few years. One person with the power to help facilitate change, Representative Paul Tittl, is using his status to continue his fight against suicide. Tittl was on the 980 WCUB Breakfast Club radio show earlier this week, and he spoke about the fact that women are more likely to attempt suicide, while men are more likely to complete the act. He also pointed out that “Men are more than likely using a weapon, while women use other alternative methods.” He refused to name any other strategies as to not influence anyone who may be in a dark place.
Tittl also spoke about what could be a major contributing factor to someone wanting to take their own life. “I think there’s a lot of times people think that they are all alone in this world…and that simply isn’t true.” Statistically speaking, you know someone that has thought about taking their own life or someone that is thinking about it right now.
It is very important to pay attention to those around you. If they are going through a hardship, don’t be afraid to ask how they are feeling. Most people tend to feel exposed, and naked when they express themselves, so a good way to help someone feel comfortable expressing themselves is to explain a time where you also felt hopeless. Expose your insecurities, and they will be more likely to do so as well. If you are going through a rough time don’t be afraid to express your feelings to someone. Keeping it bottled up inside rarely has a positive result.
