It is an issue that has been making headlines in Manitowoc County for over a year now, but the County Board is continuing to push for a half percent sales tax increase. The Board has created a plan on how to use the money generated from the tax, but there is a problem with it. County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer was on 1240 AM WOMT’s Be My Guest program, and he explained that the problem with the proposal is that “They want to share the money with the municipalities and not the school districts. That is an illegal way to share the money.”
The Board will be meeting tonight, and Ziegelbauer says they will be considering a resolution to “ask the Wisconsin Attorney General for yet another opinion…I don’t think it will be different than the two opinions they got from the Corporation Council and the Legislative Council” who both said that it is not a legal proposal.
The County Executive continues to be adamantly opposed to the tax, saying that the Board’s plan is not a good one. He says that there is “no need” for the tax, and Ziegelbauer said that he doesn’t believe the people of Manitowoc County want the tax either. Ziegelbauer said in a news release back in May that he plans to “stick to our long term financial plan of keeping our debt low, having a robust capital improvement program, maintaining our facilities, County Trunk roads, and equipment while holding the line on taxes.”
