A 34-year-old woman suffered critical injuries and a man is in custody following a hit-and-run incident early today in the Calumet County Town of Rantoul. Calumet County Sheriff Mark Wiegert said his office received a 9-1-1 call, at about 3:30 am, that a woman had been struck by a vehicle in the 5600 block of Irish Road. The female had gone outside to investigate after hearing some noises near her garage. The sheriff said when she confronted the suspect he fled in his vehicle that was parked nearby, striking her as he drove away. The 34-year old was transported via helicopter to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah with life-threatening injuries. Wiegert stated a second responding officer found the suspect & his vehicle in the ditch about a mile away. The male suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being sent to the Calumet County Jail. Charges of OWI causing injury, as well as Burglary, will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office. The incident remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office was assisted by Hilbert/Potter First responders, Potter Fire Department, Chilton Police & Fire Departments, New Holstein Police, Gold Cross Ambulance and Theda Star Helicopter.
