Manitowoc submarines built during World War II are commemorated in a new memorial along the Chicago Riverwalk. Constructed to educate new generations about submarine history and attract more visitors to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, the memorial effort was led by Vietnam War sub vet Frank Voznak, Junior. Voznak Jr. said he and his base members at the World War II Submarine Veterans Memorial Crash Dive Base were challenged 9-years ago to do something to remember Pearl Harbor. The veteran’s son, Frank Voznak the third, designed the monument after studying the bulkhead or interior walls of the USS Cobia. The memorial is located at the Lakeshore Drive Drawbridge where submarines came down the Chicago River in the 1940’s before traveling to Lockport. Features include showing the same architecture of a real submarine and an opportunity for observers, while sitting on benches to peer through real, water tight doors from the USS Trout.
