June 15th is recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is utilizing the occasion to offer a number of free resources for seniors and their caregivers. The DATCP reported that recent nationwide statistics tell us that seniors actually report falling victim to scammers less often than younger consumers, but seniors tend to report losing significantly more money. The DATCP is attempting to help the older generations not get taken for a ride by scam artists, and is encouraging them to utilize the Consumer Protection Hotline, and the DATCP Senior Guide. Content for the Senior Guide is sourced from the hundreds of free consumer protection and identity theft fact sheets on the DATCP website, datcp.wi.gov; under “Publications” in the main menu. If you have a consumer question, there is likely an answer in these documents.
