Barge traffic on the Mississippi River is usually heavy this time of year, but not this year. It’s at a standstill because high river water levels have closed 10 lock and dams downstream from La Crosse. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers is getting ready to do a lot more dredging to keep the river deep enough when the barges are moving again. There’s no estimate when the traffic can resume yet.
