The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has announced that the Neville Public Museum of Brown County is the recipient of an Award of Merit for their exhibit entitled “Delay of Game: Experiences of African American Football Players in Titletown”. “Delay of Game”, which ran through March 25th, focused on the experiences and challenges of African American Packers players throughout the franchise’s history. The exhibit embraced difficult history especially in Green Bay’s predominantly white community. Today, African Americans make up less than 3% of Green Bay’s population, compared to only .09% in 1950 when Bob Mann, widely regarded as the first African American started for the Packers, played the game. Delay of Game explored today’s social issues and their connection to football. This included profiling young players into certain positions based on race and the NFL national anthem protests. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 74th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.
