According to the FCC and FTC, one-ring scams are back nationwide. You get a call from a number you don’t know, and the call stops after just one ring. Calls usually come in bursts in the middle of the night.
The scammer is hoping you’ll call back because it’s really an international toll number (recent calls have been from a 222 area code – West Africa) and will appear as a charge on your phone bill — with most of the money going to the scammer.
- Don’t call back. If you do and are asked to hold, hang up…the charges are accruing.
- Always check your phone bill for suspicious or unusual charges
