There were some excellent performances by lakeshore area athletes over the weekend at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships. Those athletes on the podium receiving medals included: Leah Kralovetz of Denmark, a double state champion in the 1600 and 3200 meter run Anna Gallagher of Two Rivers, who placed 3rd in the 3200 & 6th in the 1600, Nate Griepentrog of Valders, a state champion in the 800 meter run, Brillion’s Emily Cohen, 3rd in the shot put, Tanner Bartolini of Kewaunee & Jackson Koenig of Denmark were 4th & 5th respectively in the shot put. Elio Alzate’ of Kiel finished 4th in the 110 hurdles. Emily Behnke of Manitowoc Lutheran wound up 5th in the discus, while Kory Wiegert of Mishicot took 6th in the 800-meter run. Hunter Krepline of Brillion was also 6th in the 1600-meters Shariah Clemons of Two Rivers ended up 6th in the shot put, and Justin Miller from Howards Grove finished 6th in the high jump.
Unforeseen circumstances also do happen at big meets, like the one at UW La Crosse. Manitowoc Lincoln senior Emily Dawidowich went to State in 3-events, including a relay. She qualified for the 100-meter dash finals but pulled a hamstring in qualifying for the 200 meters, in the late stages of that race. Still, Emily, who broke 9 school sprint records at Lincoln this Spring showed courage by going to the starting line for the 100, and jogging to the finish line, ending up 10th. She could not compete in the 4 by 100 relay and had to be replaced by an alternate with all four Ships competitors writing Emily’s name on one of their hands as they ran the race.
