Hundreds gathered at the Veterans Memorial on Michigan Avenue across from Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc to honor and pay respect to those who laid down their lives to keep America free. Mayor Justin Nickels addressed the crowd with a message of reflection saying “while it’s a solemn day it’s a beautiful day because they didn’t lay down their life for nothing. They laid down their life so we could be sitting here today.” 25TH Assembly District Representative Paul Tittl delivered a message of gratitude saying “We have so much to be thankful for as we have asked so much of our men and women who serve today.” Manitowoc County Veterans Services Officer Todd Brehmer reiterated the true meaning of the holiday saying “An eternal flame in the War Memorial symbolizes a nation’s perpetual gratitude towards and in remembrance of its war dead. So-as we gather today and continue enjoying the weather and company of friends and family just remember why we are gathering today.” Musical selections were courtesy of the Clipper City Chordsmen and the Manitowoc Marine Band. Memorial Day Observances were held throughout Manitowoc County to honor not those locally but to the nearly 1.4 million veterans that gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend America’s freedom.
