At approximately 4:40 AM on Tuesday, May 28, a Manitowoc County Sheriffs Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling northbound on I43 in the township of Centerville. The Silver 2007 Chevrolet Impala was being operated by a 24-year-old male from Green Bay along with his passenger, a 31-year-old female from New Franken. The vehicle fled by traveling northbound at speeds reaching 115 mph. Manitowoc County Sheriff, Dan Hartwig, reports that the vehicle exited the interstate at highway 151 / Calumet Avenue and proceeded eastbound into the city of Manitowoc. The vehicle continued to exceed the speed limit and proceeded through a red traffic light at County Road R / Rapids Road; because of this the pursuing deputy discontinued the pursuit.
Deputies eventually located the suspect vehicle on the south side of Calumet Avenue near South 37th Street. It was determined the vehicle had crashed into a utility pole and the occupants fled on foot. With the help of a citizen, the operator and his passenger were later located hiding in a garage in the 1700 block of South 41st Street. The operator was arrested for knowingly fleeing an officer, criminal trespass to dwelling, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating after revoked. He was also issued citations for failure to wear a seatbelt, reckless driving, failure to stop at a red light, and passing vehicles on the right. His passenger was arrested for obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, bail jumping, and criminal trespass to dwelling. The pursuit was 7.8 miles and reached speeds of 115 mph.
In a press release, Sheriff Dan Hartwig thanked the Manitowoc Police Department and the citizen who assisted with identifying the suspects in this incident.
