Throughout the City of Manitowoc, you’ll find tributes to our brave soldiers and those who haveĀ gone before us.
On the south side of the city near the lake is Red Arrow Park. The park is a tribute to the 32nd Infantry Division, who wore the Red Arrow when it was activated for service in WWII. They were the first U.S. Division to fight an offensive action against the Japanese in the Pacific and were involved in 654 total days of combat in the war, more than any other American division.
On the north side of the city, you’ll find the Eternal Flame which is inside the Soldiers and Sailors monument on North 18th Street. The monument was erected in 1923 to honor Manitowoc County veterans, and the flame was added in 1969. Later, in 1986, the Manitowoc County Veterans Memorial, across the street from the monument, was dedicated. Manitowoc County Veterans Memorial Park memorializes the long list of names of those Manitowoc County residents lost in war.
Memorial Day weekend is also a time that you’ll find Manitowoc residents placing flowers at the gravesites of their loved ones as a gesture of respect and remembrance.
The annual City of Manitowoc Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9 am. The parade route starts at South 8th and Washington Streets, continuing on 8th to Huron Street, west on Huron Street turning into Michigan Avenue, and continuing on Michigan Avenue to the Veterans Memorial for the ceremony.
