The Calumet County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously this week to build A new jail and sheriffs office and renovate parts of the County Courthouse at a Cost of $35 million. Plans call for the new facility to be built next to the existing one on Court Street in Chilton. It’ll expand from 25 thousand to 110 thousand square feet plus adding a screening area and third floor remodel for The Court House. The new Jail will have 89 beds with possible expansion to 128 beds by double-bunking and address additional space for inmate services in- an- effort to reduce recidivism rates, plus use a POD system for better supervision. Finance Director, Dan DeBonis says they will borrow the $35 million over three years which would increase property owners tax rates by an average of 37 cents per $1000 of equalized property value-or approximately $66 per year. Construction is expected to begin soon with estimated completion of the jail expected to be in the spring of 2021.
