The Appleton Fire Department has confirmed this morning that an Appleton firefighter was killed in a shooting incident early last evening near the city transit center. The identity of the firefighter, a 14-year department employee, has not been released yet. Three other people including a police officer were wounded and they were transported to Fox Valley hospitals. Appleton Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen and Mayor Tim Hanna are expected to make a public statement later this morning.
A police spokeswoman said police and fire departments responded to the transit center for a medical call just before 5:30 pm. And while they were treating the person, the incident escalated into shots being fired. Authorities are trying to determine what led up to the shooting and how many rounds were fired.
