“What happens when an inmate gives birth while incarcerated?” SeehaferNews.com reached out to Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig with that question after it was reported that child abuse death suspect, 27-year old Rena Santiago, is pregnant and was due to give birth Sunday. Santiago and her two co-defendants are confined to the Manitowoc County Jail in lieu of $100,000 dollars bail on charges connected to the April 26th death of her 2-year old son. Sheriff Hartwig tells us that pregnant incarcerated females are covered by the State Badger Care System until their 6-week postpartum check-up. He added an officer will be present at the hospital for the birth & until the patient is discharged. The sheriff is responsible for costs, as with any inmate who needs guard duty at the hospital. Badger Care also covers medical expenses. In addition, Manitowoc County Human Services—Child Protective Services—is involved with the care and placement of the newborn child.
