According to the FTC, nationwide calls about imposter Social Security Administration representatives are surging and have overtaken fake IRS calls as the primary imposter scam making the rounds. In Wisconsin, we are seeing the same. In April alone, fake SSA calls were the top reported scam to the Consumer Protection Hotline, with more than 7 times more reports about phony SSA calls than IRS calls. The FTC notes that SSA imposter calls have constituted nearly half of the reports the agency has received since February, and consumers have reported losing more than $19 million to SSA imposters in the past year. That overtakes the $17 million reported lost to IRS imposters in 2016, the peak year of IRS scams.
