In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, InCourage Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center in Manitowoc will be hosting a display of artwork done by area students that recognize sexual assault awareness month and tackle sexual assault head-on. The display will be set up at Manitowoc City Hall this Wednesday and available to view from 3:30 pm to 8:00 pm. These astounding pieces of art were created by students in the Manitowoc and Two Rivers school districts, and are striking and powerful. “Sexual assault impacts all of our lives,” InCourage’s Fund Development and Community Relations Specialist, Jason Granger explained. “To bring it into the light, to talk about it, to work on prevention, it has to be community-wide. This event will help with that goal.”
In addition to the art display, InCourage is placing an installation of decorated jeans at River’s Bend Health and Rehab at 960 South Rapids Road in Manitowoc. There will be a special showing of the display on Thursday, as well as a presentation on SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness Month) by InCourage Prevention Educator and Victim Advocate Katherine Andrastek.
The symbolism of the jeans traces back to an Italian sexual assault case, wherein judges ruled that a woman gave her consent because her jeans were so tight, she had to have helped take them off. Women in Italy immediately rebelled against this ruling, and the movement spread around the world.
According to Granger, this event is a good way to learn about how sexual assault impacts everyone.
