A new family scavenger hunt tour experience opens Wednesday, May 1, at the Manitowoc County Historical Society, the first day of the museum’s 2019 summer season.
The Seek and Find family scavenger hunt began in 2018 and has been expanded with more interactive offerings for the 2019 season. It is part of the audio tour offerings of the museum, which also includes the classic “Voices of the Past” tour.
Also new and coming soon to the Manitowoc County Historical Society this season:
Kummer Smokehouse
The Kummer Smokehouse was originally located on the farmstead of Gustav and Maggie Kummer in what is now the River Heights Subdivision in the City of Manitowoc. Like the Petzold Log Smokehouse near the Kunze Cabin, it was used to smoke ham and bacon. It was also used to smoke fish. The Kummer Stone Smokehouse was dismantled and brought to our museum in 1994 and was reconstructed throughout 2018. The project was made possible by the generosity of the Kummer Family and the MCHS Vetting Fund.
Heritage Skills Expo
A new interactive experience will be held on Friday, May 3 from 10 am to 2 pm for the public and homeschool groups. Wisconsin’s settlers filled their lives with simple pleasures and useful skills. Join museum crafters and farmers for a celebration of Wisconsin’s rich folk life traditions! Discover a heritage craft, such as spinning and knitting. Explore heritage farm skills, such as wood-stove cooking and antique machinery. Watch specialty craftsmen such as blacksmiths and broom makers create their wares.
Explore Abilities Weekend
Explore Abilities Weekend, held on May 25 and 26, is an opportunity for children and adults with learning differences and their families. Explore Abilities gives families the opportunity to enjoy the Museum’s historic structures and grounds at their own pace and also participate in the special activities occurring throughout the weekend.
Starting Wednesday, May 1, the Manitowoc County Historical Society, home to the McAllister House Welcome Center and Pinecrest Historical Village, will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Sunday through October 24. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children age 4 to 17, and free for children under age 4.
