A total of 16 trees are in the process of being cut down in Washington Park due to the infestation of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). City of Manitowoc Operations Manager Chad Scheinoha says per DNR recommendations, four smaller trees will remain to give the bug a food source to prevent further spread into other nearby neighborhoods. The city will close the park during removal operations. A plan is in place to replace these trees at a later date.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources informed the City of Manitowoc that EAB had been detected in the city back in July of 2017, and over the last two years, the City Forester has been monitoring Ash trees on City-owned property. In 2018 the City received an Urban Forestry Grant which is covering 50% of the funds for this tree removal and is assisting with the costs of treatment.
EAB has been found to be nearly 100% fatal to untreated Ash trees.
