Plans are being finalized this week for implementation of a new alignment for Manitowoc Public Schools beginning in September. MPSD Superintendent Mark Holzman tells SeehaferNews.com that the Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday night. He told us that they typically meet at noon, but they “moved it to 7:00 because of some public interest.” On top of some regular business, the majority of the meeting was used for “…talking about our school model and schedule, and grade alignment.”
Holzman explains the board completed a couple of parts of the alignment package, but still has some work to do. He said the board was balancing “…trying to make a change moving our grades at a pace of which the Board and the community can accept.” Holzman stated. “They have heard some feedback from community members, specifically regarding course offerings and schedule and the structure of the middle school.”
The superintendent said all 6th graders would work with a team of teachers: 9 at Washington & 7, at Wilson Middle Schools. Holzman added the board is “doing everything it can to learn & understand this process.”
The school board approved the academic schedule for 7th and 8th grade students, but specifics of that schedule still need to be worked out. Another special meeting to do-just-that is scheduled for this evening at 5:00 o’clock, following a gathering of the Curriculum Committee. Meanwhile, Holzman announced some personnel moves from Tuesday’s meeting: the school board approved the shift of current Lincoln assistant principal, Lance Masters, to become the new principal at Washington effective July 1st. Masters, who has experience in the middle-school model, will take over for the retiring Kathy Lemberger. She will remain at the school thru June to help in the transition process. Also, Cathi Burish..the principal at the Riverview Kindergarten Center is-retiring and the new position of Dean of Students at the 9-through-12th grades at Lincoln High School was recently filled by the hiring of Lainey Braun.
