Update: Flood water has receded enough to re-open Broadway Street and Rapids Road.
S. 41st Street south of Broadway and Archer Street from Rapids Road east to the river will remain closed. The city warns to be alert to rapidly changing conditions. Do not drive or walk through flooded areas.
The first full day of spring has brought more flooding on the Manitowoc River, which has caused some streets to be closed. Mayor Justin Nickels told Seehafernews.com, “There was a foot and a half increase in water level in about 5-minutes.”
This rising water has forced the City of Manitowoc to close Rapids Road from Ellis Street to Broadway and Broadway from N 42nd Street to Meadow Lane/Meadow Court. The higher water level is a result of the ice jams and backed up water in the Manitowoc River. The ice jam is currently occurring around the big bend in the river to the southeast of the Rapids Bridge Construction project.
Mayor Nickels says; “The Senior Center is open and bussing is available for anyone evacuated to have a safe place to stay.”
City personnel are monitoring the situation and roads will remain closed until there are no longer any safety concerns.
