Manitowoc continues to experience flooding issues related to the spring meltoff, with ice jams forming near the Shoto Dam in the West Twin River causing emergency services to perform water rescue of residents behind the ice jam and otherwise evacuating people in that area. The City of Manitowoc has also closed Manitou Park & Lower Schuette Park as a safety precaution due to the potential for rising water on the Manitowoc River.
Please take precaution and follow these safety tips:
• Do not drive around barricades or through standing water.
• Look for alternate routes of travel.
• Evacuate your home if the water is approaching or your basement is flooding. If you have water in your house, our first priority is your safety.
• If water is touching the electrical box and/or furnace, please contact your utility company or 911 if there is an emergency. Stay out of wet areas.
• If you have been evacuated from your home we advise you await emergency management’s decision to re-enter.
• Water near or around bridges will cause the bridges to be closed for a period of time. If a bridge is closed due to high water, this closure includes pedestrian traffic.
• Public Health recommends that you discard any food or drink that came in contact with flood waters.
• Do not wade or play in flood waters as they may be contaminated. If you come in contact with flood waters, wash thoroughly with soap and warm water.
• Keep pets out of flood waters. If you handle a pet that has been exposed to flood waters, wash thoroughly with soap and warm water.
