A 33-year-old homicide suspect is being held in the Carlton County Jail for allegedly shooting his uncle to death last year. James Francis Montano would face a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole if he is convicted of the top charge. Witnesses say Montano opened fire outside his father’s home in Progress Township last April. His bullets killed 57-year-old Andrew James Gokee and wounded 38-year-old Hudson Gauthier. Montano made his first appearance Thursday in Carlton County District Court.
