Research by the U-S Department of Agriculture shows dangerous contaminants found in Kewaunee County private wells came from farms. Scientists say the nitrates and coliform in the water can be traced back to agricultural operations. Two years ago, a previous research project found 60 percent of the wells sampled in the county were contaminated. The report’s author says the biggest risk factor was having a well close to a manure storage pit. There is a health risk even if a private well is three miles away.
