Authorities in the Rhinelander area say it cost them thousands of dollars to respond to what they thought was a hostage incident Tuesday night. Twenty-year-old Alyah Wayman told police she had been assaulted and managed to get free from an armed man at a local motel. Police and the Oneida County Special Response Team arrested 33-year-old Scott LaPlante. Investigators say they don’t think LaPlante ever had a gun and they don’t know why Wayman made up the story. She will be charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and underage drinking.
