Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce is expressing opposition to Governor Tony Evers’ proposal to close the state’s so-called “dark store” loophole. W-M-C claims there is no loophole to close and the myth was created by taxpayer-funded lobbyists in an attempt to increase taxes on local businesses. Spokesman Scott Manley says the governor’s plan would do nothing other than make it more expensive to do business in Wisconsin by unfairly targeting small businesses, local retailers and hometown manufacturers. Evers and Democrats say the loophole allows big-box retailers to base their tax assessments on the value of vacant stores, which reduces their property taxes.
