A 70-year-old Manitowoc man is dead following a semi tanker truck vs. pedestrian crash early Saturday in the Town of Newton. Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig said in a news release today that his deputies-and-EMS personnel responded to the incident, about 1 am on County Road C-R, south of Viebahn Street. The sheriff explained that the preliminary investigation indicates 52-year old John Licht of Manitowoc was driving the truck northbound on CR when he collided with 70-year-old James Eberhardt. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Licht was hauling milk in a tanker-trailer for Wiese Trucking from Lomira. Speed & alcohol do ‘not’ appear to be factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Manitowoc County Coroner, and sheriff’s office. Personnel assisting at the scene included: Newton Fire and First Responders, Manitowoc Police, Fire and Rescue, and the County Highway Department.
