Two of the driving forces behind Milwaukee PBS’ highest-rated local series were just voted the “Best of Milwaukee.” John McGivern has been selected as the Best TV Personality and the Best Stage Actor, and John Gurda was chosen as the Best Author, by the readers of the Shepherd Express.
John McGivern is the host of Around the Corner with John McGivern™, a weekly series that explores living, working and playing in the state’s unique communities. John Gurda appears with McGivern at the start of each program and provides some history and context to the area. For eight seasons, McGivern and Gurda have delighted viewers by bringing to television the local flavor of each community, the history of these communities, and the personal stories of the residents.
The Shepherd Express has published the “Best of Milwaukee” list since the 1980s. This list is based entirely on the votes of its readers and recognizes the best the city has to offer in food, retail, health, culture, and politics.
This year, McGivern won both Best TV Personality and Best Stage Actor, two categories he has won numerous times over the last several years. A multiple Emmy award-winning actor, McGivern’s professional career has encompassed stage, film, and television since 1979. As is evident to his viewers, McGivern loves every moment of hosting Around the Corner with John McGivern™ as it allows him to see different communities that make up the state that he will always call home.
A celebrated Milwaukee historian, John Gurda is a hard man to beat in the category of Best Author. He has been winning this honor almost every year for over a decade. Gurda has introduced our city’s unique history to both Milwaukee residents and the rest of the nation. Milwaukee PBS’ widely successful docu-series, The Making of Milwaukee was based on Gurda’s book of the same name and continues to air on Milwaukee PBS and on PBS stations across the country, 12 years after its premiere. Also, Gurda’s book, Milwaukee: A City Built on Water was also developed into a documentary that premiered on Milwaukee PBS in 2015 and continues to be broadcast in Milwaukee, statewide, and throughout the country.
Around the Corner with John McGivern™ airs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10, and is currently in its eighth season. The weekly series is also broadcast throughout the state on Wisconsin Public Television and nationally on the WORLD Channel, which is broadcast locally on Milwaukee PBS Channel 36.2 (Spectrum 976).
