Unemployment rates rose slightly in both Manitowoc and Manitowoc County in December. Numbers released by the State Department of Workforce Development show the city’s rate of three-percent is up three-tenths of a percent from November’s number of two-point-seven percent but even with three-percent recorded last December. A similar story in Manitowoc County where December’s jobless rate of two-point-nine percent is a three-tenths percent jump from November’s figure of two-point-six percent and down a tenth-of-a-percent from December 2017’s number of three-percent. Manitowoc strays from the norm as preliminary December 2018 unemployment rates declined or stayed the same in 26 of the largest 32 metropolitan areas in Wisconsin while Manitowoc County was one of 20 to have its jobless number increase from November 2018. The statewide unemployment rate checked in at 3 percent—the 11th consecutive month where it remained at or below that number.
