Members of the Lakeshore Amateur Radio Service Club (LARSC) will be setting up camp this weekend at Point Beach State Forest for their “Braven for the Haven” event. Club members will set up functional amateur radio stations operating on portable emergency power, and attempt to make local contacts as well as connect with other operators in the region and nationwide. Sponsors make a donation per contact, similar to walk-a-thons, but others can certainly donate a set amount instead. Ken Ivey, LARSC President spoke about the event, saying, “The Haven event mimics a day in the life of the homeless, who often live without the luxury of shelter or permanent power. These conditions provide a perfect backdrop for radio operators conducting emergency communication, allowing us to practice skills and stress our equipment while supporting a local worthy cause.”
