Manitowoc’s local coffee shop, Jenn’s Java, is trying to do their part in helping the environment. Since the start of the new year, Jenn’s Java has been offering the use of paper straws as opposed to plastic ones. Jenn Backus, the owner, guesses that about 25% of customers have tried the paper straws- with mixed responses. Some have noted that the straws have a different feel in their mouth and they just aren’t used to them. Others might not appreciate that the paper straws don’t last as long in liquid as a plastic straw would. What’s exciting though, is that Jenn has been receiving positive feedback in terms of customers who are excited to be making small choices that help the environment. Jenn explained that there is a sign on the straw dispenser to inform customers about the change, and asking for feedback. The coffee shop is currently exploring various brands of paper straws before deciding on a final option. The goal is to be plastic straw free by June. Backus commented that, unfortunately, the restaurant business is usually a pretty high waste environment- with single-use gloves, paper towels, and to go cups often filling their garbages every day. She feels a responsibility as a business owner to try and combat that where possible. Although biodegradable paper for take-out containers is 20 times more expensive than the foam version, Jenn’s Java has also made that investment. Backus notes, “a cost I am willing to swallow to do my part.” Other environmentally sound decisions that Jenn’s Java has tried to implement include using Tupperware containers for storage as opposed to ziplock bags, offering mugs/glasses for those who do not need a to-go cup, and trying to reduce plastic utensils and condiment containers when possible. They are also currently working with their distributor to get lids for cold drinks that have sipper covers so that a straw would be unnecessary. Jenn shared that she believes “education and awareness are key. I see my employees making smarter choices about disposable items and hope that we can pass some of that onto our customers in a friendly way.” Jenn’s Java is doing their part to help our environment. As Backus noted, “I’m not sure how much science and the Earth can batter us over the head with pictures of devastation and foretelling of doom before we realize that the health of the planet is our responsibility!”
