A 36-year-old Manitowoc man facing several charges in connection to a dog starvation death last month had his preliminary hearing delayed until next week as he continues to seek legal representation. James Nettles is charged with mistreatment of animals causing death—intentional mistreatment of animals—two counts of failure to provide shelter or sanitation and two counts of failure to provide food and drink. Police responded in early December to a residence in the 1100 block of North Eighth Street for an argument between a couple which turned out to be over the death of one of their two dogs. The deceased canine—Apollo—had no food in it stomach or small intestines while the other dog suffered from starvation and was extremely underweight and dehydrated and is on the way towards a complete recovery. Nettles is due back in court January 29th at 1:30.
