The addition of about 100 auditors at the Wisconsin Department of Revenue has more than covered the additional cost. State lawmakers dedicated 14-million dollars in the most recent budget to create the positions and they led directly to the collection of an additional 72-million dollars. State officials say there was an increased focus on collecting taxes from out-of-state businesses which were often unaware they owed Wisconsin taxes. About 400 tax auditors are on the job after the additional hires.
