There are around 5,000 homeless people in Wisconsin, and the recent drop in temperature paired with the New Year’s snowfall has compounded the issues people down on their luck face. Homeless shelters in the area are seeing a spike in the number of people utilizing their facilities in an attempt to escape the frigid cold. On top of the cold, the recent snowfall has made finding a place to sleep a near impossibility. Many shelters have to turn people away, because they simply don’t have the room to accommodate them. Thankfully studies have shown that nearly all homeless people have been able to find refuge in some sort of shelter, 92% in fact. Another positive trend shows that the number of people without a place to call their own has dropped since 2010, down 22.5%.
