A Manitowoc man was taken into police custody yesterday after he allegedly strangled his girlfriend. The woman called the police to the home the two share in the 1000 block of Memorial Drive at around 4:10 yesterday afternoon. She told police that she was planning on going to Milwaukee when the 30-year-old man began to argue with her. He attempted to take her cell phone, and in the process put her in a chokehold. The victim told police that she was unable to breathe for 10 seconds or so, and was unable to catch her breath. She threatened to call the police and was able to take his cellphone. This lead to another scuffle, in which the man squeezed her neck with his hands, in two 5 second intervals. When the officers attempted to put him into handcuffs, the man was struggling and making it difficult. The man is being charged with two counts each of strangulation, and misdemeanor bail jumping, as well as one count each of resisting an officer, and felony bail jumping.
