If you are trying to figure out what to do with that leftover Christmas tree, it can be put to good use. Manitowoc County residents and businesses can bring used natural trees to the Compost Site at 3000 Basswood Road, where it will be chipped and turned into wood mulch. Recycling Center Operations Manager Jon Reisenbuechler says the mulch is used for groundcover and erosion control in landscaping projects and trails. Trees can also be used for constructing wildlife habitat. If placed in a backyard, trees provide shelter and protection for songbirds during the winter. They can also be placed in loose piles at the edge of a woodland to help support birds, small mammals, and even the predators that depend on them for food.
Trees can be brought to the recycling site from 7 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 8 to noon. You are asked to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, stands and storage bags. If you want to take some trees that have not been mulched, there is no charge.
