As the Christmas season approaches, many people are beginning to buy gifts for their friends and family, and one of the most popular items to buy are gift cards. They are convenient and easy to use, but like any other item, are open to scams. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection is warning those who may receive offers for free gift cards to be wary of the offer. Scammers will ask for mobile phone numbers tied to the promise of free gift cards, which is not a legit offer. Always be sure to inspect the packaging on any purchased gift card to ensure that all the protective stickers are there and that the PIN has not been exposed as well.
