Marquette’s stingy defense held the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Golden Retrievers to 22 percent shooting in a 67-42 win in the season opener. Markus Howard and Sam Hauser scored 15 points each to lead the way in the first game the Golden Eagles have played in the new Fiserv Forum. Howard chipped in eight rebounds and seven assists. U-M-B-C surprised the college basketball world last March when it became the first number-16 seed in N-C-A-A tournament history to beat a number-one seed, taking down Virginia 74-54.
