The coal-fired portion of the power plant in Sheboygan has been shut down. This comes as Alliant Energy begins their transition to natural gas powered plants. The nearly 50 year old plant had it’s final day of operation last Friday, and will be replaced with a plant in the Town of Beloit. That location should be fully operational by the year 2020. It is being reported that the Sheboygan Power Plant burned nearly 950,000 tons of coal last year, generating power for 200,000 homes. It is also the 3rd coal plant that Alliant has closed in the past three years.
