Officials from the Milwaukee County Zoo announced today that the 15-year-old female African lion named Sanura was humanely euthanized on Friday, September 7. Sanura was originally introduced into the Milwaukee Zoo in 2005. She lived at the zoo with her mate, Themba and gave birth to a litter of cubs in 2011.
Sanura has experienced several chronic health issues throughout her life that was managed by the animal care staff at the Milwaukee Zoo. Recently the African lion began to show signs of decline that became unmanageable. She was humanely euthanized with her keepers by her side throughout the process.
