When people think of someone getting hit with an OWI, the first thought is typically that they were driving drunk. However, Operating While under the Influence can also mean they were driving while on drugs. The number of such cases has been on the rise throughout the state, and the fact that they haven’t resulted in more crashes in very lucky. As the opioid epidemic is getting more attention, the problem is being addressed, but is far from under control. The Wisconsin DOT reports that, while alcohol related crashes are down over the past decade, the number of drugged driving incidents has risen. While this may be due to more people driving while under the influence of drugs, it could also be due to better training in the police force to identify an individual doing just that.
